Randomized clinical trial (RCT) A study in which participants are prospectively assigned to arms of the trial by randomization, a process of assigning trial subjects to treatment or control arms using an element of chance. Randomization minimizes bias in assignment among study groups and seeks to balance the distribution of people with various characteristics among the trial arms.
Recombinant BCG (rBCG) Any strain of BCG that has been genetically modified, usually to express a larger amount of certain antigens or escape from the endosome, and thus produces a stronger immune response.
Recombinant DNA Genetically engineered DNA made by joining fragments of DNA from different organisms.
Ribonucleic acid (RNA) Genetic material of certain viruses (RNA viruses) and, in cellular organisms, the molecule that directs the middle steps of protein production.
Route of immunization Method by which a vaccine is administered to a patient. Vaccines can be given intradermally or percutaneously, as with BCG, or nasally or orally, as is the case with other vaccines.
